GlobalNxt University stands at the forefront of future-ready higher education, offering a globally accessible, affordable, and flexible learning experience that remains academically rigorous — powered by innovation, collaboration, and diversity.
The university’s origins date back to June 2001, when it was founded in Singapore as U21Global — a groundbreaking joint venture between Universitas 21, a prestigious global network of research-intensive universities, and Thomson Learning (later Cengage Learning).
Founding member institutions of Universitas 21 included globally renowned universities such as the University of Melbourne, University of Nottingham, University of Virginia, and the National University of Singapore.
In 2007, Cengage Learning sold its 50% stake in U21Global to Manipal Universal Learning International, a Mauritius-based subsidiary of the Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG) — one of Asia’s largest and most respected private education providers.
By 2010, the shareholding of Universitas 21 was diluted to 25%, with only 10 universities retaining equity.
In 2012, the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Malaysia invited U21Global to relocate and re-establish itself in Malaysia, in support of the country’s ambition to become a global education hub.
This led to the transformation of U21Global into GlobalNxt University — a fully licensed Malaysian university headquartered in Kuala Lumpur.
In 2018, the university adopted the name Manipal GlobalNxt University to align more closely with the global vision and brand identity of the Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG). A new logo was also introduced to reflect this strategic rebranding and the institution’s continued evolution within the Manipal ecosystem.
On 20th May 2025, the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Malaysia approved the restoration of the university’s original name: GlobalNxt University, replacing Manipal GlobalNxt University.
This marks a significant milestone in the journey of GlobalNxt University, reaffirming its founding vision of delivering globally relevant, future-ready education founded on the principles of flexibility, accessibility, and affordability — while upholding international standards of quality and recognition.
In conjunction with the name change, MOHE also approved the adoption of a new logo that reflects the university’s restored identity and refreshed brand image.
The return to our original name reflects both the enduring legacy of GlobalNxt University and our renewed commitment to innovation and excellence in higher education.
GlobalNxt University continues to redefine the boundaries of higher education—empowering learners to lead, innovate, and make a meaningful impact in an increasingly interconnected world.
